Despite the strange situation which we are all in, there are some things in our lives which are carrying on as normal, or at least almost, and that is sports. One of the industries which has found its feet pretty quickly with regards to new regulations has been the fight game, and the world of MMA and boxing is very much alive and kicking. Inspired by a piece which Ayden Hector wrote last week, I wanted to go through some of fights which I am super excited for this year, let me know what you think.
Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury
If you believe the media then you would think that Joshua has been ducking Fury but to me, I think it has been nothing more than a question of time before these two brilliant British heavyweights finally meet in the ring. The bout was in question ahead of Joshua’s rematch with Ruiz, because had he lost that, there wouldn’t be the attraction with the Fury fight, at least not from Tyson’s end. Now that Fury has shown himself to be bigger and badder than Wilder, it is time of these two titans to go head to head. Both have outstanding power and great boxing skills, it all comes down to who is best prepared.
McGregor v Khabib
It surely will happen, won’t it? Connor McGregor takes on Dustin Poirier this week and following Khabib’s retirement many thought that the fight against the Irishman wouldn’t be something which we saw. Khabib however has now spoken out about this upcoming fight, leaving the door open for a return, and a rematch with Connor for the belt. If Connor wins against Poirier on Saturday, we could all get our wish.
Covington v Masvidal
The first and fourth best ranked in the division, ex-training partners who have bad blood and a people’s hero against the UFC’s most hated fighter, this is the fight that has to get made this year. Is there a flight that you can think of with as much at stake or as many reasons for it to be put on? I’ll wait.
Bones Jones v Winner of Stipe and Ngannou
Jon Jones has been talking abut stepping up to heavyweight for some time now, and this could be the year that it needs to happen. The match between Stipe Miocic and Ngannou will be a great spectacle, and surely we have to have Jon waiting in the wings for the winner.
Canelo Alvarez v Jermall Charlo
It seems that there is no toppling Alvarez and whilst GGG arguably beat him twice, and got robbed, the stats are what they are. Many fans may wish to see a trilogy against Golovkin but the most realistic, and equally exciting option, is that Jermall Charlo steps up to super middleweight and chases the Mexican down. Stylistically this fight makes perfect sense.
Which is the fight that you are most excited to see this year?
