Bone Fractures: Causes, Symptoms, And Treatment.

March 11, 2021

A bone fracture happens when the force applied is powerful, and the bone cannot stand it, disturbing the bone and causing it to bleed. There are various types of bone fractures. Some bone fractures are severe depending on the force’s strength applied to the bone, type of bone, and the person’s age. Common bone fractures are on the ankle, wrist, and hip.

Man with broken leg talking with doctor in hospital corridor.

However, hip fractures occur mostly in older individuals. Bone fractures can take a few weeks to heal depending on the extreme of the person’s injury and age. Orthobiologics specialist may use Orthobiologics substances to help your broken bones heal faster.

Causes of bone fractures.

Traumatic sports accidents, falling, and car accidents are the leading causes of broken bones. Also, conditions like osteoporosis and some types of cancer can potentially cause bone fractures. Minor trauma and fall can cause severe bone fractures. When your bone breaks, you can lose a lot of blood. Your chest can be damaged if your ribs break. Also, a skull fracture can damage your brain.

Symptoms of bone fractures.

Fractures differ from other damages to the skeleton, like dislocations. It can be hard to differentiate between fractures and injuries. A person can have different types of injuries. If you are unsure if a person has an injury or bone fractures, treat them as fractures. Symptoms of a fracture depend on the specific bone and the degree of the damage. You might experience pain, swelling, bruising, and inability to move the limb.

First aid for bone fractures.

After an injury, useful first aid is essential to the bone. Movement of the broken bone can lead to excessive bleeding, pain, and damaging the surrounding tissues. It can also cause complications and delay the healing of the bone fracture.

First aid on the bone fracture aims at reducing the mobility of the bone. You can use splints to control bleeding. Splinting can realign complicated bone fractures in broken limbs. However, only the doctor should do the splinting. Fractures on the head, ribs, and pelvis are severe, and a physician should manage them immediately after the accident.

If you suspect a person has a bone fracture, avoid moving the person unless there is a near danger. Attend the bleeding wounds first. To stop the bleeding, press firmly on the wound with a dressing cloth. Then cover the damage with a clean dressing cloth after the bleeding reduces. Do not try to straighten the broken bone.

Give the injured person something like a pillow to support themselves. Ensure you do not cause further pain on the broken bone as you do the first aid. Raise the injured place high and apply something cold on the area to ease the pain. Ensure the injured person does not eat or drink anything until they visit s doctor for treatment. Contact emergency numbers in your country to seek help.

Bone fractures diagnosis and treatment.

Physicians use an x-ray, CT, and MRI scan to diagnose bone fractures. Broken bones recover on their own. The need for medical treatment is to make sure the bones are correctly aligned. The bones need to heal fully for strength, sensitivity, and movement. Some complicated bone fractures may require surgery and surgical traction.

The treatment method used on fractured bones depends on the fracture’s location and its severity. Doctors may use splints to ensure the broken bone does not move, braces, and plaster cast to support the bone. They will also give you painkillers to relieve the pain after an injury. Doctors might also insert metal rods through surgery to hold the bone pieces together. Traction is also a treatment option to treat bone fractures. A doctor will put you under general anesthesia when conducting the surgery on your broken bones.

After the surgery, the doctor will check if you have regained sensitivity in the wounded area. They will also check your limb for tingling or coolness. These checks are to determine if the splints are affecting your nerves and blood circulation. The wounded area must remain still for a few days. The physician will advise you on how to take off your bone fracture after you leave the hospital.

Bottom line.

You need to seek medical attention immediately after a bone fracture. Some complicated fractures require surgery to hold the bone pieces together. Do not lift heavy things until your bone fracture heals completely. You can take x-rays to check the healing process of the bone fracture. You may need strengthening exercises to help your bones heal.

Congenital Related Issues

March 11, 2021

It is the joy of every parent that their children are doing well health wise. A good parent will do all he or she can to ensure the child is kept safe from things that interfere with their general being. However, several things are beyond man’s control and could only get explained by a supernatural being. Conditions such as hypospadias happen at birth, and nothing can happen to avert such from happening. The good news is that despite the anonymity of the disease, practitioners in the medical sector continuously work around the clock to correct such rising situations on new born babies. Thanks to technological advancement in the medical industry, different procedures have been developed to perform infant hypospadias repair and other congenital conditions.

About Hypospadias

This is a rare condition among newborn babies where the opening of the urethra forms on the wrong section of the penis. Usually, the urethral opening is located at the tip of the penis and covered by the foreskin. Although this conditional does not interfere with a person’s ability to take care of a child effectively, it is essential to ensure correction before the child grows old and experiences difficulties in undertaking adulthood activities such as sexual intercourse. Corrected hypospadias will enable the male to have natural urination and uncomplicated reproduction.

Symptoms of Hypospadias

Apart from the unusual location of the urethra, there are other signs linked to this condition that includes the following;

  • Anomalous spraying of urine during urination
  • The penis curving downwards
  • An abnormal covering of the penis in the top half
  • The urethra opens at a section different from the tip of the penis. This could happen beneath the scrotum in rare cases of the condition.

When Hypospadias Repair in an Infant takes Place

While most cases of this disorder get diagnosed after a child is born, treatment cannot happen immediately. A doctor will conduct a physical examination on the baby to determine the extent of misalignment. Usually, the baby will go through surgery 6 to 12 months after birth to correct the disorders though, for minor situations, non-surgical approaches could help solve the issue. What happens if the condition gets discovered during circumcision? Doctors recommend that a child having hypospadias should not go through circumcision and in case it is identified during the process. Precautions need to be taken not to advance the problem. For either situation, considering the services of an experienced pediatric urologist is crucial.

It only takes one surgery to correct the condition successfully, and afterward, the penis will look normal and could undertake its normal functions appropriately. In the event there occurs an after-surgery complication such as the formation of fistula, scars, and wounds that refuse to heal, one will have to undergo a second surgery.

Causes of Hypospadias

While it is still unclear of the major causative factors of the condition, scientists attribute this to parents’ various life skills and genealogy. Researchers attribute hormonal imbalance during the formation of the urethra in a male fetus as the main reason why hypospadias forms. Some of the prenatal risk factors include

  • Gene variations are a factor that may hinder the formation of certain hormones essential during pregnancy.
  • Study reveals that women who conceive at older ages of 35 years and above are most likely to give birth to children with this condition.
  • Although it is not certain, some scientists imply that exposing expectant mothers to substances such as pesticides and drugs would result in hypospadias. However, more research is underway to ascertain the speculations.
  • Couples from families with a history of hypospadias are more likely to conceive a child with such a condition.

Other forms of birth disorders include;

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome
  • Spina bifida
  • Cystic fibrosis

Ways to Prevent the Occurrence of Congenital Disorders

Today, physicians have come up with programs to test spouses before they get pregnant to reduce disorders that happen during childbirth. A recommendation is that spouses meet a qualified genetic counselor if one has a family history of given congenital disease to weigh on options before conceiving a child. A standard procedure for such kinds of parents is going through an in-vitro fertilization treatment. Some factors to consider avoiding such conditions include living a healthy lifestyle, getting on a folic tablets therapy before getting pregnant, and into the first trimester into the pregnancy. Additionally, avoiding hormonal substances and products such as alcohol and cigarettes is crucial to keeping the congenital disorders at bay. These measures have helped reduce the occurrence of genetic diseases immensely.

Why Face Lifts Cost Less Than They Used To

February 22, 2021

Many years ago the cost of a facelift was such that it was almost exclusively for the world’s rich and famous, and the idea of the average Jane in the street being able to afford one was nothing but fantasy. In the current day however this is a procedure which so many people have access to and that is because face lifts cost far less than they ever have. We spoke to a leading plastic surgeon about what he felt the reasons for this was, and why this procedure to help patients look and feel younger, is now a fraction of the cost that it once was.

Supply and Demand

One of the main reasons why this has occurred is down to supply and demand, and this has come about because of changing attitudes towards cosmetic surgery on the whole. Many years ago this was a terrifying procedure but in the modern age those taboos have been well and truly smashed. Now that so many know just how safe a procedure this is, they are more than happy to have it done, and that has meant that the demand increased. As this demand increased so too did the supply which brought about healthy competition, thus lowering the prices overall.

Advanced Procedures

Over the years the techniques which have been used to give a face lift have also changed and that again has contributed towards a great lowering of the price of a face lift. One of the biggest contributing factors to this is the fact that patients now need significantly less time in the OR, and simply put, less hours mean less cost involved with the surgery. Remember that time in the OR is about more than just your occupation of the room, it is also about the nurses and the surgeon who need to be at work for those hours, you are paying for them all. The advanced procedures have greatly helped to bring the costs down to the patient.

More Widespread

What we have certainly seen over the last decade is that many surgeries are popping up in locations where they would never have been previously and that is why they too can pass the savings on to the patient. For example even now, with lower costs, the likes of Beverley Hills is still going to be at the higher end of the spectrum with regards to the cost of this procedure. For this reason, and to combat those higher costs, high level surgeons would look for places which cost less money in rent and where they could offer this kind of procedure at a far lower price than the likes of those surgeons in Beverley Hills and other expensive spots.

Much like so many cosmetic procedures, this is one which has seriously fallen in cost over the last decade or so and that is something which we can expect to continue in the coming years. Is this a procedure which you would have done?

Warning Signs You Need To See an Eye Doctor

February 8, 2021

All of us know the significance of an eye test, yet many of us go years without getting them tested. The reason? Money, time or maybe the frightening thought of anyone coming close to your peepers?

But, whatever the reason is, postponing that eye appointment with your doctor will do you no good. There are also some people who skip out on these exams even when they have some kind of an eye problem.

Eye exams are not only important in case of poor vision but they are also helpful in detecting underlying health conditions before they start showing symptoms. If you have been coping with eye discomforts for a while, it might be a possibility that your vision has gone worse and you need prescription glasses.

Every individual must sign up for an eye exam every two years. But, if you have been putting up with the following symptoms for some time, visit an eye doctor right away.

You start to have persistent headaches

Constantly pounding head might be a sign that your vision has started to drop off. When this happens, your eyes work harder than before to see clearly which is why you get a headache. In some serious cases, persistent headaches might be a sign of astigmatism, farsightedness or a severe eye condition. Would you still want to delay that appointment?

Also, headaches may also occur if you’ve been spending excessive screen hours. In this case, you need blue light glasses to give your eyes a break from the overexposure to blue light.

You have caught an eye infection

Infections in your eyes are bad news as they can get worse in no time. So if you have started to develop one, make sure you get your eyes checked by an eye specialist.

When something gets inside your eyes, they turn red and you may experience a liquid discharge coming from your eyes. In such cases, your doctor might prescribe you antiviral medication or eye drops to treat the infection.

Problem seeing at night

Where the ability to see in dim light is normal as you get older, it is also a symptom of cataract. Once you have developed this eye condition, it can only be cured via an eye surgery.

Once you start to have trouble seeing at night, make sure you consult an eye doctor to know how you can stop the progression of cataract. They might recommend you glasses to have a better vision during the night.

Constant eye pain

If your eyes are crying from pain, do you need another reason to visit a specialist? We hope you don’t choose to put up with your painful eyes, but see a good eye doctor about it instead. Usually the main culprit behind this problem is dry eyes. But, it can also be signalling towards a more serious cause including glaucoma or damaged cornea. Go see an optometrist and know what the matter is.

Squinting

We squint our eyes when they are not able to bend the light properly on the retina. This is the most common sign of a potential refractive error.

When you will see an optician or optometrist about your situation, they will perform a series of visual tests to know what type of refractive error you have. Based on your test, they will recommend your prescription power.

You can take this prescription power and buy your first pair of men’s or women’s glasses from your optician or from an online retail store.

Your eyes have become sensitive to light

When the proteins in your eye cells start to form a cluster, your crystalline lens becomes cloudy. This situation is generally known as cataract.

It can make your peepers sensitive to light and when you look directly at light, you will only get a blurred vision. So if you’ve started to avoid looking at a source of light, you better run to your eye doctor to know what exactly is causing this.

Your prescription is changing frequently

If you already wear men’s glasses for your declined vision, your prescription will normally change after every 2 or 3 years. However, if it is changing more often, it could mean that something more problematic is going inside your eyes.

Frequently changing prescription might be the symptoms of cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration.

The conclusion

Sitting around and waiting for your eye problems to disappear is not a smart move. Rather, go and get your eyes checked. In case your vision has declined or you have developed a refractive error, wear glasses. You don’t even have to spend much on them. You can easily buy cheap glasses online for your specific prescription and help your eyes to see better.

Dr Cletus Geroges – Respecting The Rules When Outside

January 28, 2021

This is no doubt the toughest moment of the entire pandemic and it is essential that we all follow the advice given to us by the experts in the medical field, to continue to respect the rules around social distancing and mask wearing when we are out in public. Post Christmas it was inevitable that we are going to have more cases and as many medical experts like Dr. Cletus Geroges have mentioned, the announcement of the vaccine seems to make everyone think that we are in the clear, we certainly are not.

It is absolutely critical that we continued to follow the rules, and here is exactly why.

New Strains and Higher Cases

We may be sick of this virus and the impact that it has had on our lives but it is not yet done with us and that is why we have to make sure that we continue to fight and continue to follow these rules. There are new strains which have been found as the virus has mutated and there is also a large rise in cases following the holiday season. Despite the fact that we are one year down the line, the reality is that these rules are more important than they have ever been.

Protecting the Vulnerable

Whatever you may think about yourself, your health and whether or not you want the virus, or whether or not you care about it, the key is that we are all trying to protect those who are most vulnerable in society. The decision to follow the rules is not for ourselves but for those around us and this is yet another reason why we should all continue to wash our hands, wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

We Want to Open Up

It is absolutely critical for our mental health and for the economies of our countries that we have everything opened up and that businesses continue to trade. We have already seen so many businesses disappear and that means that there are people out of work and there are people who are facing big financial problems. We can help to get things opened up once again through the use of masks and social distancing when we are out. If we continue to follow these regulations then we will be able to get back to normal sooner rather than later.

Reduction of Spread

Ultimately we are now seeing overwhelming evidence that this approach to going out and about does work in slowing the spread, and that after all is what we are looking for. We cannot run away or hide away from the pandemic but at the very least we can make sure that we reduce the pressure on hospitals and try to give our doctors and our nurses the break that they need.

Lets work together on this, pay attention to the experts and keep working with and for one anther to get through this awful pandemic.

Lisa M Cannon MD – Masks and Social Distancing, Here Is Why We Have To Keep It Up

January 28, 2021

Although the measures which have been implemented to help us stay safe are annoying and frustrating, it is essential that we continue to stick to them. What we have seen in recent weeks, in fact since the vaccine was first announced, is people taking a far more relaxed approach to this. Experts like Lisa M Cannon MD have been warning that we still need to take things seriously and to be sure that when we are out and about, that we maintain safe distance between ourselves and others, and that we are using masks and washing our hands regularly, and here is why.

Worst Point

Whether we like it or not, we are in fact at the worst point since the beginning of this pandemic, and the cases are higher than they have ever been. Owing to this it is essential that we are continuing to do all that we can in order to reduce the number of cases and to protect those who are most vulnerable. This is absolutely critical at the current time and hospitals are very quickly filling up.

New Strain

It was always understood that the virus would mutate and change the way that it attacks the body, and this is exactly what has happened. There is a new strain now and that poses further problems for so many of us. It is critical that we do all that we can to look after ourselves and to look after those who are most vulnerable.

It Works

Ultimately the point of these measures is so that you can avoid getting the virus and also to avoid giving it to someone else. It may be that you are asymptomatic but you do have the virus, and this means that you could easily pass it on to others. Through maintaining correct distance and through the use of masks, we can quickly reduce the spread of this nasty virus, at least until we have a solid number of people vaccinated.

To Move On

Ultimately whilst the cases are as high as they are, we will see further lockdown sanctions and that means that none of us can get on with life and enjoy things like we used to. And so if we make sure that we are looking after ourselves when we are out and about, then we can slow the spread, reduce the cases and get out to shops and restaurants once again. The longer that the figures remain as high as they are, the more likely it is that we will be facing a great deal more lockdowns.

This is about protecting yourselves and about protecting those in society who are most vulnerable. The truth is that given what those incredible healthcare staff are doing for us, the very least that we can do is to stay 2 meters away from people and to wear a mask, at least for the short term.

Roger Wolfson – Why You Don’t Need to Buy Gym Gear to Stay in Shape

January 26, 2021

Throughout the last 12 months the fitness community have been really helpful in inspiring us to get in shape and to work on staying in shape throughout what has been a tumultuous 12 months. Now many of us will try and make excuses for not getting in shape, and one of the most commonly used excuses is a lack of equipment. This however really shouldn’t be a stumbling block and there are so many fitness experts like Roger Wolfson who are doing great work in helping people to get in shape, no matter how big their home is or how much equipment that they have. Here is why not having gym equipment shouldn’t be an obstacle.

Bodyweight Training

There are so many exercises which you can do that will help you stay in shape, using nothing more than your own bodyweight. Think about routines such as press-ups, sit-ups, burpees, squats, squat thrusts and planks, all of these require absolutely nothing but your own body and some desire. If you follow a routine such as Tabata, which is interval training for these kind of exercises, then you are going to seriously increase your strength and burn plenty of calories too.

Weights

If you do wish to use some weights but you cannot afford to buy professional gym weights then fear not, as there are so many options around the home for things that you could use. For example you could fill up a backpack with some tinned products and then go for a run, alternatively you could load up two backpacks with similar items and use them as free-weights. Now having dumbbells will help you to gain a better result from lifting weights, because they are so balanced, but they are not the only way to build strength. Any heavy item in the home or in the garden will be enough to help you to strengthen up.

Easy Cardio

If we think about doing cardio then this again shows us exactly why you do not need all kinds of gym equipment like treadmills and spinning bikes. For example skipping, this is a very easy way to increase your cardio and can be easily done with a long cable or piece of rope. Running requires absolutely no equipment whatsoever and it is a fantastic way for you to carry on burning those calories. Even following simple cardio routines like jumping Jacks and running on the spot will help you to increase your heart rate, which is just what you need in order to burn fat.

It is nice to have gym equipment of course and for some this inspires them to do more exercise at home and to push them towards their goals. The reality however is that none of the equipment is necessary if you want to get in shape, as there is so much that you can do without all of that pricy equipment.

How You Can Definitively Care for Your Skin as You Get Older

January 21, 2021

When we reach a certain age, we may notice some changes in our skin – our skin will indeed look different from when we were in our 20s and even 30s. These changes can be subtle at first, but with age, skin can become more vulnerable and needs greater care. Of course, everyone will age in a different manner, but there are general changes that may be apparent, such as drier skin, skin that looks thinner and may appear more paper-like, and skin that can develop wrinkles, creases, and spots. Skin can also appear blotchier as we get older, and it may even be easily irritated. You may bruise more easily as well, and you may notice that you are sweating less. If you are concerned about how you can properly care for your skin as you get older, here’s your best and most essential guide.

When bathing

Cleansing is important, but it can leave your skin dry, especially if you use hot water. The first rule, then, is to use warm water instead of hot. Hot water may feel amazing, but it can easily remove the natural oils from your skin, leaving it drier. If you can, replace bar soap with a cleanser or wash that’s gentle, fragrance-free, and creamy. It would also be best to use soft cloths rather than a bath brush or buff puff for your skin as it can get irritated, and when you have your shower or bath, keep it short. Often, a ten-minute shower or bath will do.

After you bathe, pat the skin dry, but remember to leave a little bit of moisture on your skin (leave it damp). When you have remaining water on your skin, it can more readily absorb moisturiser. Use a moisturiser that’s clean and creamy and free from fragrances, and do this within just a few minutes of bathing or showering.

Protecting yourself from the sun

Protecting yourself from the sun is the second most important thing you can do for your skin, and if you do, you can likely prevent the appearance of fine lines, age spots, and wrinkles. Protecting yourself from the sun can also prevent blotches – and, of course, it can help lessen your risk of having skin cancer. The best sunscreen would be one that has a high SPF of 30 (or more) and make sure to apply it every two hours if you will be spending more time outdoors. Sunscreen will not completely block out the sun’s rays, so it’s important to seek as much shade as possible as well. You should also wear clothes that can protect you, and long trousers, long-sleeved blouses, and hats.

General care for older skin

General care for older skin also involves making use of skin care products that have ingredients such as vitamin C, which is a powerful and effective antioxidant that can fight free radical damage. There are many skincare products that optimise vitamin C, such as SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF from www.totalbodycare.co.uk which combines vitamin C with phloretin and ferulic acid that can reduce and correct visible ageing signs.

Make it a point to go fragrance-free with all the other products you use, and avoid strong perfumes and colognes that can irritate sensitive, older skin. At 50, you should also make an appointment with a dermatologist as your risk for developing pre-cancerous cells becomes higher as well.

When to See a Doctor About Hearing Loss

January 8, 2021

If you find yourself using phrases like “what?” or “excuse me?” in conversation more often than not, you might have some form of hearing loss. If this is the case, you would be one of 37.5 million Americans over the age of 18 who have reported some form of hearing loss. If you think that you have hearing problems, you will want to get it checked out as soon as possible. Visiting with a hearing specialist could help you maintain your quality of life by helping to preserve some of your hearing.

A hearing healthcare professional can be an advocate for you throughout the evaluation and exam processes. These professionals are the only ones who can administer a hearing test and recommend treatment options for your hearing loss. Getting to an audiologist or other hearing professional as soon as possible will give you the best shot at limiting your hearing loss. But how do you know when you need to see a doctor? Let’s take a look at what can cause hearing loss and when you should see a doctor for it.

When to See a Doctor

img

There could be many reasons for hearing loss. From age and noise-related injuries to a host of other medically related conditions, hearing issues can be sudden or develop over time. Although it can happen to people at any age, hearing loss increases as people get older. As the inner ear changes throughout life problems can develop. Pair those changes with prolonged noise exposure over a lifetime and you have a perfect storm for hearing issues.

Aging and cumulative noise exposure can impact your understanding of person-to-person or phone conversations. It can also hamper your ability to hear speech over ambient noise, or your ability to even hear the television. If you are exhibiting these signs of hearing loss, these are good indications that you should seek the advice of a professional for a treatment plan.

In addition to a gradual degree of hearing loss brought on by age or noise exposure, there a few other instances when you would want to seek the opinion of a doctor. Sudden loss of hearing, often accompanied by some kind of ringing sensation or fullness can be signs of a serious problem. The hearing problems could risk becoming permanent if you don’t seek help. Hearing loss of this kind could be present when you wake up or occur suddenly during the day.

Another serious problem could be a loss of hearing in one ear. This could come on progressively over time or suddenly as well. Unless there is a cause for this, such as exposure to an explosion on one side, this type of hearing loss necessitates further evaluation. Knowing when to see a doctor could be crucial to saving your hearing. If you don’t already see an audiologist or ENT specialist, doing a simple search for “hearing specialist near me” could help you locate a doctor to evaluate your symptoms.

Gather Information

img

Specialists including audiologists, speech-language pathologists, otolaryngologists, laryngologists, and others work at identifying and treating hearing loss. If you think you are experiencing any level of hearing loss you should see one of these care specialists to identify potential problems like tinnitus, tumors, or sensorineural hearing loss. While you could have just gradual untreated hearing loss, you might have another condition that could require cochlear implants, hearing aids, or other treatments. If this is the case, it is always good to get a second opinion. Doing research and seeing a second doctor or care specialist could give you peace of mind and provide you with a full picture of the care you need. You could even seek an online second opinion. IfIf you do experience hearing loss, companies like Blue Angels Hearing offer high-quality hearing aids for an affordable price.

Most people see a doctor for annual physicals to protect their overall health. These visits can detect medical problems before they become major concerns. When it comes to hearing, however, many people don’t go in for regular screenings. As a result, hearing issues that could have been avoided go untreated. Since hearing issues have been linked to social isolation, depression, and balance and gait issues you must protect your hearing health. Hearing screenings should be integrated into your wellness routine. These assessments have proven to be important tools that can identify minor to severe hearing issues.

6 Tips for Preventing Computer Eye Strain

December 29, 2020

The gig economy created ample opportunities to work from home and perform remote tasks, meaning people are spending more time than ever before in front of a computer screen. The excessive amount of uninterrupted time spent in front of computer monitors created the ailment of computer vision syndrome, which is a real condition, resulting in dry eyes, vertigo, eye strain, double vision, and headaches. While prescription safety glasses can help correct some of the issues many people face, other tactics or solutions can provide some relief to the syndrome’s symptoms.

1. The 20/20/20 Rule

One of the best ways to prevent straining your vision is to exercise and refocus it frequently. The 20/20/20 rule is a simple routine, but it is likely the most efficient and easily instilled practice currently available. To put it into practice, you work in front of the computer for 20 minutes; then, look away for 20 seconds, focusing on an object that is 20 feet away. Another similar exercise is to work for 20 minutes and alternate between focusing on a distant and close object for 15 seconds each.

2. Adequate Lighting

People often assume that a brighter workspace is better, but that is not always the case. When it comes to working on a computer, you want the computer area to be about 50% as bright as the rest of your office in terms of ambient light.

If your office is too bright, or you find that the windows reflect too much into your monitor, consider purchasing window coverings. Blinds or curtains can provide significant relief to your eyes, leading to prolonged and more effective performance.

3. Correct Monitor

While most current monitors in production are flat-panel liquid crystal displays, some people still have cathode ray tube units. The CRT models flicker, causing significant eye strain, even if you do not notice it.

LCD monitors not only resolve the flickering of the CRT models, but they also perform better. The monitors come with anti-reflective surfaces, larger displays, and are more durable. All around, LCD technology is better for your eyesight.

4. Monitor Settings

Even when using the correct monitor with the proper lighting, your computer screen can still lead to eye fatigue or other issues. To reduce the possible risks further, consider adjusting your monitor and display settings. First, adjust the brightness. While the screen should not be duller than the surrounding room, it should also not appear as a light source. If you struggle to find the appropriate light level, consider looking into apps for help.

Second, adjust the color temperature of your display. Blue light is more problematic than red or orange light because of its wavelengths. Eye fatigue is a direct result of blue light exposure; therefore, you want to find a balance that limits or reduces eye fatigue.

Finally, you can alter your text size and color, making it more comfortable to read. For example, larger text on a high-contrast background is easier to read (think black and white).

5. Schedule Breaks

Breaks are crucial to protecting your eyes and eliminating eye strain risks. While the 20/20/20 rule is useful, you still need to find time during the day to take longer breaks away from the computer. Your eyes need time to rest. Spending eight hours straight in front of a computer is a surefire way to cause damage or injury.

6. Prescription Computer Glasses

If working in front of a computer screen for long periods is unavoidable, consider talking to an eye doctor. An optometrist can examine your eyes and determine if prescription glasses for computer use are in your best interest. These glasses can also help reduce strain and focus problems.

Are you interested in prescription computer glasses, or do you need to take longer breaks? While the above steps can help reduce your eye strain, you might need to consult with a doctor for more specific and concrete solutions.
