You may have to be at home if you’re in lockdown, but YouTube is a gigantic online video university. And here are just some of the things you can learn on YouTube during the quarantine.
As an online entertainment (and procrastination) tool, YouTube is one of the best around. As you start watching videos, hours can go by without you noticing. But having its scope and visualization capacity, Google’s streaming service is also a good tool to learn things, or teach them, a global online classroom.
Some are using it in this way during the coronavirus quarantine. And Google wants to make things easier for them:
Learn through YouTube
Google is clear: “We want YouTube to be useful as a learning resource for families around the world.” For this reason, they have launched many learning -dedicated features, which seek to inspire and help people through access to quality educational content on YouTube from worldwide edutubers.
The Learning platform can be accessed at youtube.com/learning, or from the new Explore tab of the YouTube app.
Learn From Home
There are various sites with educational or learning resources for families with kids. The new sites offer featured videos from some of the most popular educational channels to help with homeschooling. They cover disciplines such as mathematics, science, history, and art. These resources do not replace the duties assigned by teachers, but they are a good complement to them.
#With me
In the current context, we are staying home to work or study, but this situation can make us feel isolated. To try to avoid this, Google has been inspired by the global #StudyWithMe movement, in which students share their study experiences online.
That is why they have created the #StayAtHomeWithMe initiative on YouTube, which includes playlists under themes such as:
- Cook with me
- Study with me
- Exercise with me
- Draw with me
- Clean with me
YouTube Kids
YouTube Kids offers children under the age of 13 a safer environment to explore and satisfy their interests and curiosity on their own while providing parents with tools to manage that exploration. Now, Google has created three playlists with activities designed to keep your children entertained:
- Educational videos
- Crafts
- Information on how to wash your hands
Apart from homeschooling and educational content, you can find almost anything you want to learn more about on YouTube. Many experts and gurus who previously did face-to-face sessions have moved to the platform and now offer their expertise on YouTube.
And of course, you can find an endless list of “How to…” videos covering everything imaginable. From how to make avocado tea to how to tune a banjo, you’ll find someone who knows how to do it – and is willing to show/teach you.
We may be stuck at home, but there’s no reason why we shouldn’t make the most of it and learn something new. And YouTube is probably the easiest and best place to start!
